Nordic Neighbours – does it make a difference?
10-11 September 2015
Location: Galleri CFF - Centrum för fotografi
Tjärhovsgatan 44, Stockholm
In recent years Nordic photography has attracted an increasing interest in the Nordic region as well as in the rest of the world. In this context many new collaborations has started and network has been formed. Nordic cooperation is certainly not new, but has existed in various degrees for decades. Nevertheless, it is interesting to examine more closely what this means for our image of ourselves and of each other.
The point of departure for the seminar Nordic Neighbours – does it make a difference? is for instance wheter there is a specific Nordic expression to distinguish and define. The idea of such an expression is probably not completely unfounded. Characteristics often mentioned may for example be light, nature, solitude of the people, depictions of workers or people in exclusion. But it can also be staged images
that challenge and question our "way of seeing", or a portrayal of someone who turns the camera on oneself. Nordic photography is not a coherent field with a set of identifiable characteristics. On the contrary, it is a complex field composed of a variety of disparate expressions with different kinds of influences, sprung from a range of different traditions.
The seminar Week 37, this time organized in Stockholm, focuses on themes around artistic expression. One aim of the symposium is to relate different levels of expression which exists within artistic project production. Week 37 Stockholm would therefore like to discuss artistic expression, curatorial expression and the creative expression of cultural instituions.
