Theo Elias - Smoke at galleri Rotor2
Theo Elias is presenting his photographic work Smoke in a exhibition in Sweden for the first time. The project was the winner of the La Fabrica dummy award 2018 and will be released during Photo London in May 2019.
"In 2010 the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted. Ashes were thrown up into the air and followed the winds south, leading to a total standstill in flight traffic over Europe for many weeks. The same year I applied to photography school and didn’t get in. This led to a kind of life crisis and I was looking for a meaning in things. Later that year, Iceland almost went bankrupted in the aftermath of the economic crisis. I felt like the world was balancing on the edge of a knife, and that all the tensions were concentrated to this remote island, so I decided to go there.
Smoke is a visual essay about how I kept coming back to this island for six years. It’s a story about sharing cigarettes with strangers outside closed bars, how I came to know Julie and my failed attempt to climb a mountain. But over all it is a story how I became a photographer and artist." Theo Elias
