PEEK – 24 Emerging Photographers
PEEK
The Art + Commerce
New York Festival of 24 Emerging Photographers

ABOUT
We are pleased to announce that the Art + Commerce Festival of Emerging Photographers will be shown in Stockholm during this year’s Photofestival XpoSeptember, at the gallery “Centrum for photography” from September 14 to October 18, www.centrumforfotografi.se.
XpoSeptember, the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts, has taken place in Stockholm every other year since 1998. Participating in the festival are art institutions, galleries, universities and independent spaces for art and photography. The aim of the festival is to constitute a platform for photographic images and visual art, and the discussion on these topics, were the participants on the field can join together in a manifestation. In 2006, XpoSeptember celebrates its fifth edition, which will be held from September 23 – October 22.
The 2006 years festival will open with a rich exhibition program consisting of about 50 participants which will show a broad spectra of genres ranging from historical photography, conceptual art, documentary and journalistic features etc, but perhaps most of all contemporary swedish photography. The program will also present artist talks, portfolio reviews, works shops, seminars, meeting places and more. The key seminar will focus on the theme for this years festival – Europe, at which an eminent group of international guests will talk. For further information: www.xposeptember.se
The Art + Commerce Festival of Emerging Photographers, begun in 2004, encourages the recognition of the diverse and talented photographers based in the New York area whose work has not yet been appreciated by traditional print and exhibition venues. We are proud to be highlighting the international caliber of New York based photographers at XpoSeptember.
In 2005, The Art + Commerce Festival of Emerging Photographers invited photographers not represented by a gallery or an agent for assignment to submit an on-line portfolio of their work. Upon an open call for entries in the spring of 2005, over 1,100 photographers submitted their work. The submissions were reviewed by members of Art + Commerce and an esteemed jury made up of distinguished professionals, including photographers, editors, book publishers and gallery owners. This year’s jury was: Fabien Baron, art director and founder, Baron & Baron; Melissa Bent and Mirabelle Marden, co-directors, Rivington Arms; Elisabeth Biondi, visuals editor, The New Yorker; Jason Fulford, photographer and co-founder, J&L Books; Josette Lata, art buyer, J. Walter Thompson; Lawrence Luhring, co-director, Luhring Augustine Gallery; Lesley Martin, executive editor, Aperture book program; Steven Meisel, photographer; Jack Pierson, photographer; Stephen Shore, photographer.
Approximately 3,000 people attended the popular opening night event at The Tobacco Warehouse, a 2,300 square meters space, just north of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. During the New York showing, thousands more came not only from the neighborhood and the local regions, but also industry professionals from around the world. Through such exposure and support, many of the photographers started professional relationships with gallery directors, collectors, magazine editors and agents. The exhibition toured to Tokyo in February 2006, in collaboration with Vantan Design Institute (see 'Tokyo' section of this website for further details). The exhibition has recently been shown in Milan, with the generous support of Italian Vogue and Fendi (see ‘Milan’ section of this website for further details) and in Madrid (see the ‘Madrid’ section of the websidte for further details).
The 2005 Festival of Emerging Photographers is accompanied by PEEK — a 172-page book that includes 150 color images, and introductory essay, biographies of the 24 artists included in this year’s Festival and a discussion with jurors and artists. Click here for further information.

ARTISTS BIOS
Michele Abeles
In Michele Abeles’ portraits, a studied and subtle drama is played out between photographer and sitter. Each portrait tells of a fugitive relationship, initiated only for the purpose of making the picture. Abeles and her subjects meet and decide where and how their portrayal will be staged, and this temporary collaboration comes to an end when the camera is put away. The photographer and the subject are caught in the conscious act of assessing and coercing each other to further these momentary relationships.
Patrick Arnold
Patrick Arnold’s series is a discord of photographs, assembled to form a single stream of consciousness. The sequence builds an overall sense of disruption and damage. Knowledge of the cause of this effect is unattainable. The extent of this un-attainability is most strongly felt in Arnold’s photographs of dark, wet surfaces and in his ‘paintings’ where he has entirely obliterated photographic images with layers of resin and dark ash. We are left to piece together he d
